The Principal
Prince Patel,
Principal Architect
Prince Patel established MDP Design Studio in Gujarat with a clear purpose: to bring considered, classical-modern interior design to homes and commercial spaces across the region — work that traditionally required engaging studios based in Mumbai or abroad.
Trained in architecture and deeply influenced by the spatial intelligence of classical Indian and Mediterranean interiors, Prince works from a principle of restraint: that the most powerful rooms are those in which nothing is superfluous. Every arch, every material transition, every lighting layer has a reason.
MDP Design Studio has completed projects in Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, and Valsad. The studio is small by choice — Prince leads every project personally, from the first site survey through to the final styling visit.
Philosophy
The conviction behind
every project.
Interior design is not styling. It is the composition of space — the calibration of proportion, light, material, and habit — so that the people who live or work in a room feel it is made for them, even when they cannot articulate why.
MDP Design Studio begins from the belief that great interiors emerge from listening. Before we draw a single line, we spend time understanding how a space is used, how it feels at different times of day, what is working and what is wrong. A brief is not a wish list — it is a diagnosis.
We work primarily in a classical-modern vocabulary: arched forms, vertical ratios, the golden section in furniture placement and shelf spacing. These proportions are not imposed as a style preference. They work because they mirror the ratios the human eye has been calibrated to find beautiful over centuries. They make spaces feel inherently right.
Material selection at MDP is always about honesty and longevity. We specify materials for how they will look in ten years, not ten days after photography. We prefer natural surfaces — stone, timber, plaster, metal — that develop character as they age rather than deteriorating.
Light is the most overlooked material in residential design. We consider light at every stage: the orientation of a room and how it changes through the day, the layers of artificial lighting from ambient to task to accent, and the way materials respond to both. A space lit well costs no more than a space lit poorly and feels entirely different.
The studio is small because we believe personal attention is non-negotiable. Prince leads every project. There are no junior designers who run jobs unsupervised. If you work with MDP, you work with Prince.
Studio Values
Four pillars.
01
Proportion Over Decoration
Good design is not about adding — it is about calibrating. We study proportion before selecting a single material. A room that holds the right proportions reads as beautiful even when furnished minimally.
02
Material Honesty
We do not use materials as scenery. Every surface we specify is chosen for its specific physical character: how it catches morning light, how it ages over a decade, how it behaves underfoot or underhand.
03
Functional First
A beautiful space that does not work for the people inside it is a failed space. We begin every project by understanding how a space is actually used — and design for that reality, not an ideal version of it.
04
Craft at Every Scale
We apply the same quality of attention to a single bedroom as to a whole-home project. Scale changes the complexity; it does not change the standard.
Location
Based in Gujarat.
Working across India.
MDP Design Studio is based in Valsad, Gujarat. We take projects across Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, and the wider Gujarat region. Projects outside Gujarat are considered on a case-by-case basis.
